I need to file for bankruptcy, and I think I've found a good lawyer, but he keeps nagging me for documents. Why does he have to do that all the time? The bankruptcy process happens to be a very compressed, very short process. It's designed to be that way, to get people in and out of the system as soon as possible and to give creditors and the court the most amount of time that they reasonably can have to review your documents and your financial information and decide what sort of relief you're really qualified for in the bankruptcy system, so we've got to get your assets and your expenses and your income and your debts, and we have to see your bank statements and we have to see your tax returns and your pay stubs, and there's no substitute for having these financial documents, so when your lawyer says I need to have all of these things before you file your case, then you know you've got to get all that together. You've got to fill out a questionnaire with your income and expenses and other financial information and that is the No. 1 impediment that bankruptcy lawyers experience when they are trying to help clients make it through the bankruptcy system, so if your bankruptcy lawyer is nagging you for documents, he's got your best interest at heart.
