The thesis looks at credibly demonstrating progress towards a genuinely sustainable transport situation, which remains a challenge. A key problem is that the incorporation of sustainability in transport policy and planning is not systematic. The core focus of the thesis is on how to ensure project impacts in terms of sustainability are identified and become inputs to decision making. One main take-away message is that future generations must be represented in decision-support tools for sustainable transport planning, a key characteristic of Sustainable Transport Appraisal
